Gutter Maintenance Tips #6 – Rain Gutter Leak

Rain Gutter Leak

A rain gutter leak can be a real problem if it’s neglected long enough. We always advise you to pay close attention to your gutter when it rains. This will let you know if you are having a problem or not. It also prevents damage such as water damage and soil erosion from occurring.

Rain Gutter Leak

Use a china marker to mark areas where leaks are occurring, water is running over and more so when it dries you can address the problem area. If you roof it high above the groud, DO NOT CLIMB on a ladder. This is too dangerous, we suggest instead that you take a photo or video. Almost everyone has a device that allows you to capture a photo or video. You can also use it if you want a professional to come out and look at it. It will allow the problem to be taken care of much faster.

Gutter Maintenance Tips #5 – Gutter Cleaning Gloves

Gutter Cleaning Gloves

If you are DIY cleaning your gutters this yea. It’s important to take some necessary precautions to prevent injuries and accidents from happening. One of the important things that you shouldn’t ignore is wearing gutter cleaning gloves. This will not only protect your hands from getting dirty. It can protect and prevent you from picking up something that is full of bacteria.

Gutter Cleaning Gloves

Your gutters catch a lot of things, and leaves are just some of the cleaner parts. Debris that have been in your gutters for a long time can start to rot and it can also be mixed with bird, pigeon and squirrel droppings none of which you want to grab with your bare hands. A good pair of gutter cleaning gloves can also prevent cuts from torn metal shards of an older ragged gutter system.

What we mean by a good pair of gloves is a thick, suede glove material is recommended because it is superior to cotton, thin leather or rubber glove. It will not soak up dirty water or rip like a cotton glove. Leather are not a flexable and will shrink after use. Rubber gloves will rip. You can find a suede glove at any gardening or supermarket(such as Walmart, etc.) and they are very inexpensive!

Gutter Cleaning Gloves

If you are not a DIY gutter cleaner, please leave it to the professionals ( such as Gutters & Guards, Inc.).

Gutter Maintenance Tips #4 – Rusted Gutters

Rusted Gutters

Rusted Gutters can lead to some serious gutter repairs, such as leaks and pieces falling off, if not taken care of in a timely manner. You should consider aluminum gutters, but if you’re going to stay with the old gutters until your budget allows you will need to get the rust off the old ones. To do this you will have to get off of the rust off, sand them down, and paint them with a good primer and then with a good quality RUST-INHIBITING paint.

Gutter Maintenance Tips #4 - Rusted Gutters

The reason we suggest aluminum gutters is not only because they will not rust over time, but they are inexpensive, durable, easy to work with, and are available in a wide range of colors. We offer seamless gutters which protects your gutter system from springing a leak.

Other types of gutter materials that are out there are galvanized steel gutter systems.

But this type of system will start to rust after 20-25 years but are worth it if you live in an area where extreme weather(heavy rains and snow) happen. For most of the area that we cover in Central Virginia, aluminum will do just fine.

We do offer galvanized steel gutters. Another materials is copper, this type is the most expensive and can bring a certain aesthetic to a home, they will change color and do not go with any style of home. The last material that we do not offer is vinyl. It is the least expensive but compared to its metal counterparts is not as sturdy or durable. It also tends to become brittle and break in the winter time. This could end up costing you more in the long run due to repairs.

To learn more about the comparisons of gutter materials, view this post. To learn more about aluminum gutters, view this post or contact us!

Preventing & Clearing Frozen Downspout

Preventing & Clearing Frozen Downspout

Frozen downspout can happen during the dead of winter. If you’re experiencing this problem fear not because we have what is more than likely causing the problem and what you can do to prevent them from being frozen for too long.

First of all you might be wonder, ” How does this happen?”

Frozen downspouts occur during the winter during or after winter weather occurs. There are a few likely scenarios that can cause ice accumulation in downspouts. If there is a large amount of snow on the ground that is covering the bottom mouth of the downspout. It will cause your downspouts to freeze. Debris in your downspouts can also cause frozen downspouts, as well as elbows of downspouts because the act as a collection point for still water and when the temperatures are cold enough, ice will form. Finally ice dams along the roof can accelerate the freezing of downspouts, if they sit on your roof for too long.

Preventing & Clearing Frozen Downspout

“What Should I do?”

If it seems like the cold weather won’t be lasting for more than a couple days and you’ve removed all the snow accumulation by the bottom of the downspout, leave the downspout alone. The warmer weather will allow the downspouts to thaw and melt. If you live in an area where you might not see above freezing point for a while you have a couple of options…

How To Thaw A Frozen Downspout

Fight frozen water with warmer water. If the weather is permitting and you can safely climb a ladder, pour warm water into the top of the downspout. This should be good enough to thaw minor ice buildup and break up the blockage. Another way you can thaw is by running hot water down the OUTSIDE of the downspout near the blocked area. If neither of these ways help, please DO NOT use force by striking your downspout. This could cause more damage than good.

Just heating up the downspout will do the trick, at least for melting the ice, it will do nothing if there is a large blockage due to debris ( this is why cleaning your gutters at least twice a year is very important).  If none of these trick help, please call a professional. Having consistently frozen downspout require immediate attention especially if the weather is looking grim in the future. If left unattended this ice may back up all the way to the gutters. Creating an extra weight and leaving more opportunities for leaks and improper drainage to happen. This leads to expensive repairs and a possibility for your gutters to tear away from your home.

Preventing & Clearing Frozen Downspout

“How Can I Prevent This From Happening?”

If it’s already too late to protect your gutter, try some of the example we’ve listed above or call a professional, such as Gutters & Guards, Inc. Minimize the chances by wrapping your downspouts with heat tape or using a heated gutter guard. This will also help prevent ice dams in your gutters as well as ice build up in downspouts. Make sure to clean your gutters out at least twice a year to prevent debris build up. When in doubt call the professionals. You can also invest in Gutter Guards. This will keep debris from building up in your gutters & downspouts and cut your gutter cleaning time spent in half.
