Bees And Gutters

Post Image

Summertime brings the bees. That means being more careful when you are working outside and around the house. Bees and gutters are a common area where they can build a nest or on a roof eave. Common areas that you will find nests are behind the fascia, gable vents, peaks, eaves, awnings and other small areas. They can be pretty easy to spot depending on the location, if not consult a professional. If you happen to randomly come upon a nest, don’t panic. Quickly just walk away or slowly go down the ladder. Acting frantically or moving quickly can be dangerous, especially if you are high in the air. Removing the can be a bit more difficult. If you are allergic to bees, hire a professional. It’s not worth it. If not, you can dress in thick clothes, gloves, hat, googles, etc. to protect yourself. The best time to protect yourself is in the evening, they are most inactive. One application or pesticide or spray should do the trick. Monitor their activity and once the hive is inactive, remove it and if the hive was in an area where bees should not be, caulk or make that area inaccessible.     In the event of a sting, the first thing to do is remain calm and balanced. Ask your pharmacist ahead of time for medication that will counteract the pain and swelling from a sting. And of course, if the situation feels serious, do not hesitate to call 911. Frozen Downspouts

Frozen Downspouts Frozen Downspouts. Ice happens in the winter months. You cannot prevent mother nature for happening but you can prevent the amount of build up that is left to freeze. Frozen downspouts can happen and when they do, this is the best course of action to take. Frozen downspouts; Now what to do. Typically in this part of Virginia, a cold snap doesn’t last too long unless there is snow involved. Check the weather. If the temperatures are rising above freezing in a couple days, let it go. As long as your gutters are clean and free of debris you should be fine and the ice will melt and water will move away from your home, like normal. If the ice is building up at the bottom of your downspout, clear the snow away from it and this will give the ice/water room to move.   If the weather seems like it will be at or below freezing for a while. Take some action. Heavy frozen ice can cause a lot of damage and put A LOT of weight on your gutters. As the weight increases the odds of your gutters or downspouts tearing away from your home go up. This can lead to bigger fixes such as water leaks or improper drainage.   A good way to unthaw a downspout that has frozen at the bottom is by using VERY hot water to melt it. If it’s frozen throughout the downspout, you can climb a ladder and pour water into the top, which can unthaw mild ice buildup. If the inside doesn’t work, try the OUTSIDE of the downspout. Never use force because this can truly mess up your downspout. Also never climb a ladder in wet conditions. It’s too dangerous and never worth the risk. Gutter Maintenance Tip #41 – Reattach Downspout Elbow

Post Image

Reattach Downspout Elbow Reattach Downspout Elbow. Gutter can take a lot. From massive amounts of rain passing through them yearly, they certainly get a good workout. This also means besides water some other debris can find their way in and through your gutters and downspouts including sticks and twigs. Some may fall through your downspout hitting the boot at the bottom with quite a force. If you find that the elbow of your downspout has fallen off, fear not because it can be reattached, as long as it was not completely damaged. It should be a pretty easy fix by just fitting the two piece back together. The most important thing to do is to make sure it is attached. You can attach the two pieces together with small screws or pop rivets. If the elbow that has been broken apart is the top elblow, please call a professional because it can be a bit more difficult to DIY. Gutter Maintenance Tip #36 – Smashed Downspout

Post Image

Smashed Downspout Smashed Downspout. Damage to your downspout can happen at any time. It can cause real damage to your gutter system allow debris to gather in your downspout and backing water up and over your gutters. Thankfully replacing a downspout is a fairly easy task to do. Step 1 – Removing the Old Downspout Using a drill, unscrew the clinchers, brackets and existing downspout from the top elbow. Step 2 – Attaching New Elbows If the elbow needs replaced, remove the existing elbow attached to the gutter of the house by unscrewing the gutter screws and pulling firmly. There are normally screws on both the front and back sides of the elbow. Fit the new elbows together in the exact same shape, comparing them side by side. The pieces are designed to interlock. Use the gutter screws to replace the elbows, utilizing the same front and back holes in the gutter. The elbows should now allow for the straight section of the downspout to fit snuggly up against the house. Step 3 – Attaching the New Straight Section Measure the length of the long straight portion of the old downspout using the tape measure. Make sure the section is measured with the square shoe removed. Cut the new straight portion to the size of the old one. Fit the new square shoe on the end of the new straight section of the downspout. Make sure the square shoe faces away from the house. Attach the new downspout to the elbow S curve with two gutter screws: one front and one back. Step 4- Clinchers Using the self drilling concrete screw, attach the clinchers to the side of the house in the exact places of the previous clinchers. Use a gutter screw to attach each clincher to the gutter, holding it firmly to the house. If you do not have the time or do not have the proper tools, call a gutter company (such as Gutters & Guards, Inc.) to come out and replace the downspout for you. It will take them even less time! Gutter Maintenance Tip #35 – Tree Branch Gutter Damages

Post Image

Tree Branch Gutter Damages Tree Branch Gutter Damages are more likely to happen in the winter. Due to the fact of snow and ice weighing down the already brittle branches of a tree. It’s always a safe bet to trim back the branches that loom over your home in the fall. We suggest that you do this BEFORE you clean out your gutters for the last time. Small twigs will probably find their way into your gutters during this process. If at all possible try to plan both the tree trimming and gutter cleaning with a day or so to not allow twigs to set on your gutters for too long. Why Are My Gutter Guards Causing…

Post Image

Why Are My Gutter Guards Causing… Gutter guards can be a real help if you find yourself cleaning your gutters more than twice a year or are constantly fighting downspout clogs. They are not meant to relieve you from ever having to clean your gutters. There is NO product as of date that can do that ( unless you do not have gutters which in this area of Virginia is not a good thing). Gutter guards are meant to help you cut back the time you spend cleaning out of your gutters and prevent clogs from occurring. There are many different styles and types of gutter guards out there today. We’re not trying to sell you the most expensive products out there but products that we trust and are a good fit for your home. Some homes need a screen mesh, some are just fine with your run of the mill drop in guards. Every home and gutter system is unique, but we’re here to debunk or explain some cons of the gutter guard system. Gutter guard installation can be expensive. They can cost anywhere from $700 to several thousand dollars. This is going to depend on what type of system you are looking at. Several thousand seems a bit high for the types of guards we carry but it can get up into the thousands. The bigger your home the more it’s going to cost. Get an estimate, you’ll be surprised with the costs. They are not 100% foolproof. Gutter guards still need occasional cleaning. Like we’ve stated before, gutter guards are not meant to never clean your gutters. Wet leaves and other debris can stick to anything. Some gutter guards are designed to allow a smoother surface for debris to slide off but a few stragglers will be left behind.  Some gutter guards can only keep out larger debris like leaves, sticks and more out of your gutters. Dirt, shingle grit and more can still find it’s way in. If you ever lean a ladder against your gutters (when cleaning them or hanging Christmas lights, for example), the gutter guards will become dented. This will lessen their effectiveness from that point forward. First of all, try to never lean your ladder against your gutter unless you have a stand off attachment. This can damage your gutters if you put too much pressure on them so of course it can damage your gutter guards. One small dent shouldn’t effect your gutter guards ability to work properly. If you notice a lot of damage your gutter guard, you may need to have that section replaced ( make sure your gutter is okay around that area too!) Here is a great guide to proper ladder use from ThisOldHouse. The additional weight of gutter guards could cause your gutters to sag in the center. If gutter guards are causing your gutters to sag in the center, the problem isn’t the extra weight. It’s probably going to be an issue with your gutter hangers or your fascia boards. Check your hangers/screws to see if they need tightened or check your fascia to see if the boards need to be replaced. Gutter guards should not cause your gutters to sag. They are not that heavy. If you happen to have a steep roof or valleys (where downward-sloping sections of roof meet and water runoff is heavy), the water can overshoot the gutter guard itself. This is true but it will happen gutter guard or not. Sometimes divertors will need to be installed to help direct the water where it needs to go.  We’ve had homeowners with and without gutter guards call about this problem. Tree seeds can get caught in the gutter guard slots and sprout. Forming gutter trees — and some types of tree seeds grow rather quickly! This is true. Depending on how long you let your gutters go uncleaned, it can happen! We suggest that even with gutter guards you will need to clean your gutters at least once a year. This can also depend on the type of gutter guard you have. Our mastershield gutter guard system keeps out the smallest debris ( as small as shingle grit!). So if you really want to clean your gutter only once a year, it might be your best bet. For a free estimate on gutter cleaning, repairs or adding gutter guards, call us today!
