Gutter Emergency: What To Do BEFORE Your Repairman Arrives

Post Image

Gutter Emergency: What To Do BEFORE Your Repairman Arrives Gutter Emergency: What To Do BEFORE Your Repairman. Here are the gutter problems that are most common, and some recommended solutions. Sagging Gutters and Gutters Pulling Away from the House This is usually a problem with the hangers, the hardware that secures the gutters to the fascia. They might have deteriorated over time, the fasteners may have backed out of the wood, or they’re spaced too far apart to support the weight of full gutters. You can tighten these by yourself but always have a professional take a look because you fascia could be rotting. By tightening them just a little ( don’t over tighten them either) it can help just for short-term. Leaks and Holes Leaky gutter joints sealed by caulking the joint from the inside with gutter sealant. Very small holes can be filled with gutter sealant. Larger holes will require a patch. If you can’t find a gutter patching kit at the hardware store, you can make a patch from metal flashing. This is just a temporary fix as well. Have a professional repair or replace the part of the gutter if the hole is so large. Improperly Pitched Gutters A professional should always handle this especially if you have seamless gutters. Not much you can do except make sure the gutters are clean and possibly manually removing water. Downspouts Draining Too Close to the Foundation Downspouts need to extend several feet from the house, or they’ll dump right into the basement. Gutter extensions attached to the bottom of the downspout will discharge water well beyond the foundation. Add a pipe or extension above ground.  Be very careful not to hit it with your lawnmower. You will have to have a professional bury it. Missing Gutters If your house has no gutters at all, consider investing in a system. The cost depends on the material. Most residential gutters are aluminum, which is lightweight and durable. Vinyl, galvanized steel, and copper also are available options. Gutters & Guards install Seamless gutters which allow for less holes, rust spots and repairs being needed. If your home is missing gutters, there isn’t too much you can do beside call a professional to take care of it as fast as they can. (source)   For a free estimate on gutter cleaning, repairs or adding gutter guards, call us today! Gutter Maintenance Tip #32 – Gutter Clog Removal

Post Image

Gutter Clog Removal Gutter Clog Removal. A clean gutter can keep your home in working order. We suggest that you clean your gutters at least twice a year, more if you have lots of trees around your home. Gutter clog removal can be a task you have to take care of if your gutters do not have covers and the amount of debris is greater than the amount of times you clean your gutters. We have a few tips on how to remove the few different types of gutter clogs. Gutter Clog At The Downspout Opening Remove all debris from gutters and downspout opening. Make sure to wear gloves and protective eyewear. You never know what can be hiding in your gutter debris. Once you have the gutter clean, run some water through it to see if actual downspout is clogged. If so please see Downspout Clog removal. Gutter Clog By Loose Hanger And/Or Spike 1. Remove all debris from gutters and downspout opening. Make sure to wear gloves and protective eyewear. 2. Reposition or repair the gutter supports as needed. You may want a professional to do this because it can be a tricky job to do. Gutter Clog At Downspout 1. Try to free the obstruction with a stick, plumbing snake, or pressure washer outfitted with a telescoping wand. 2. If you can’t reach it, simply disassemble the downspout and remove the clog. For more help on this job, please view our previous blog on downspout clog removal. Gutter Clog In Underground Downspout This is a tricky clog to unclog because the pipe is underground and can be crushed or damaged by tree roots, it could need a complete replacement or it could be an easy fix by just being clogged at the place where the pipe and downspout meets. To figure out what needs to be done, remove the boot of the bottom of the downspout to see the opening of the underground downspout area. Remove visible debris. Turn on a garden hose and force it into the underground portion of the line; the water pressure may dislodge the clog. If this does not seem to work, call a professional. They will have tools and will be able to assess the damage better. If you do not have the time or confidence in removing some of these clogs please call a professional. Gutter Maintenance Tip #31 – Using Large Downspout Smaller Gutter

Post Image

Using Large Downspout Smaller Gutter Using Large Downspout Smaller Gutter. The main goal of your gutter system is to collect the rain water from your roof, rush it down the downspout and away from your home.  Using large downspout on smaller gutter might be your answer. In some cases we have used a larger (3×4) downspout on a regular 5″ gutter to help all that water flow faster and prevent overflow from occurring. If you see that your gutters are constantly overflowing around the downspout area and you’ve checked for a clog, this may be the solution. Consult with a professional  (such as Gutters & Guards, Inc.) for their opinion. Let your gutter cleaning worries be behind you! For a free estimate on gutter cleaning, repairs or adding gutter guards, call us today! Trapped Roof Debris

Post Image

Keeping debris from our gutters is a tough job. Trapper roof debris  is a leaf guard issue whether it sits over or on your guard. What we mean by trapped roof debris is debris that gets stuck on certain areas of your roof, such as a valley or low-pitched roof. Issues like this will cause debris to move slowly and glacier-like down your roof and over a gutter guard. Clogging your gutter in the process. Low pitched roofs are more likely to collect debris so it’s important to clean your roof off before you clean your gutters twice a year. It not only protects your gutters from clogging but it’s gives your roof a longer life. Roof Valleys are another spot where roof debris will gather. Air flow is often restricted so a good gust of wind will not be there to help. Gutter debris will often gather at the gutter guard valley too. This debris should be cleaned out at least twice a year and if you can manage it more in the spring because that dense, wet debris will build up after spring rains. If you have a gutter that runs into an exterior wall, this is another place that trapped roof debris collects. ( View image below to see what we are talking about). Like the valleys there isn’t enough air flow to blow the debris away. Debris found here can also cause problems with your home as well, and not just the gutters. View Rempfer Construction Post about common rot areas on the exterior of the home. There is not fix-all solution if you have this problem. The best thing you can do is clean off your roof every-time you clean your gutters and monitor these problem areas. If you have a roof that is very high up or steep, please call a professional. Cleaning debris from these areas will give you a better performance from gutter guard and extend the lifetime of your gutters and roof.     For a free estimate on gutter cleaning, repairs or adding gutter guards, call us today! Gutter Maintenance Tip #30 – How To Dispose Of Gutter Debris

Post Image

How To Dispose Of Gutter Debris Part of the gutter cleaning process is disposing of the gutter debris. How to dispose of gutter debris properly can be done in a couple different ways. Remember that all types of stuff can find it’s way into the gutters. The craziest item we’ve ever heard of is a Barbie doll, but that’s the craziest item ever found in a gutter. Great ways to dispose of gutter debris is by using it for compost, as long as it is mostly tree debris it makes a great compost. If you find toys (such as Frisbee, balls, etc) or deceased animals, please dispose of and do not use for compost. Another way that is can be disposed of is by a city debris pick up. Lynchburg City has a week in November that gives homeowners the chance to dispose of debris such as gutter debris, leaves and other debris that the trash collectors will pick up to be disposed of. Lastly if you have a professional clean the gutters they should dispose the debris for you. Make sure to confirm this with them during the quote process. We, at Gutters & Guards, remove all debris from site. It is stated in our estimates that we give with each job. For a free estimate on gutter cleaning, repairs or adding gutter guards, call us today!
