Heating Solutions

Heating Solutionsfor your gutters. Heating Solutions. This time of year with the leaves falling, so does the temperature. As we kick on the heaters and bring out the extra blankets there are always ways to cut back on how much you spend keeping warm. There are a few myths that we are going to explore and help you find the best solution for you and your wallet. Myth: Turning the heat off during the day is the best way to conserve energy. This can be too risky due to the fact that completely turning off the heat will let the temperature drop and can leave your pipes more room to burst. Instead invest in a programmable thermostat. During the winter schedule your thermostat to drop to 68 degrees when you’re home or lower when you are sleeping or away. You can save money this way. Myth: Wood-Burning Fireplaces will reduce your heating bills. Fireplaces are meant to heat small intimate areas not large areas. There are fireplaces designed to heat but most of it comes from a central furnace. In most cases a heater is going to be the best choice from a thermal performance POV. If you do use your fireplace to heat a smaller area make sure to have it inspected once a year. Myth: Portable Space Heaters Hog Energy. If you live in a poorly insulated home, space heaters can be an energy-efficient option to heat a small area.  Some older homes do not come with central heating and a portable space heater is the best solution for heating up a space that you are frequenting. Do some research to find the best heater for you. If you home already has central heating, an portable heater can help save money if you turn down the home’s main heating system. Use it in the family room at night if your family gathers in one room for a few hours, but remember to follow safety rules like the 3ft zone rule or never leaving the heater unattended. Don’t forget to use eletric heating blankets if Myth: Having cold feet is just part of enduring the winter. Cold feet may actually be a sign that your home isn’t weatherized properly. If you feel any drafts along the floor, try to weatherstrip, caulk or seal any cracks. Also make sure that the heating vents aren’t blocked by furniture or any other objects. Consider buying an air deflector. And don’t overlook the obvious: Wear socks and slippers around the house. If you have ceiling fans, remember to switch to winter mode. Gutter Maintenance Tip #36 – Smashed Downspout

Post Image

Smashed Downspout Smashed Downspout. Damage to your downspout can happen at any time. It can cause real damage to your gutter system allow debris to gather in your downspout and backing water up and over your gutters. Thankfully replacing a downspout is a fairly easy task to do. Step 1 – Removing the Old Downspout Using a drill, unscrew the clinchers, brackets and existing downspout from the top elbow. Step 2 – Attaching New Elbows If the elbow needs replaced, remove the existing elbow attached to the gutter of the house by unscrewing the gutter screws and pulling firmly. There are normally screws on both the front and back sides of the elbow. Fit the new elbows together in the exact same shape, comparing them side by side. The pieces are designed to interlock. Use the gutter screws to replace the elbows, utilizing the same front and back holes in the gutter. The elbows should now allow for the straight section of the downspout to fit snuggly up against the house. Step 3 – Attaching the New Straight Section Measure the length of the long straight portion of the old downspout using the tape measure. Make sure the section is measured with the square shoe removed. Cut the new straight portion to the size of the old one. Fit the new square shoe on the end of the new straight section of the downspout. Make sure the square shoe faces away from the house. Attach the new downspout to the elbow S curve with two gutter screws: one front and one back. Step 4- Clinchers Using the self drilling concrete screw, attach the clinchers to the side of the house in the exact places of the previous clinchers. Use a gutter screw to attach each clincher to the gutter, holding it firmly to the house. If you do not have the time or do not have the proper tools, call a gutter company (such as Gutters & Guards, Inc.) to come out and replace the downspout for you. It will take them even less time! Gutter Maintenance Tip #35 – Tree Branch Gutter Damages

Post Image

Tree Branch Gutter Damages Tree Branch Gutter Damages are more likely to happen in the winter. Due to the fact of snow and ice weighing down the already brittle branches of a tree. It’s always a safe bet to trim back the branches that loom over your home in the fall. We suggest that you do this BEFORE you clean out your gutters for the last time. Small twigs will probably find their way into your gutters during this process. If at all possible try to plan both the tree trimming and gutter cleaning with a day or so to not allow twigs to set on your gutters for too long. Why Are My Gutter Guards Causing…

Post Image

Why Are My Gutter Guards Causing… Gutter guards can be a real help if you find yourself cleaning your gutters more than twice a year or are constantly fighting downspout clogs. They are not meant to relieve you from ever having to clean your gutters. There is NO product as of date that can do that ( unless you do not have gutters which in this area of Virginia is not a good thing). Gutter guards are meant to help you cut back the time you spend cleaning out of your gutters and prevent clogs from occurring. There are many different styles and types of gutter guards out there today. We’re not trying to sell you the most expensive products out there but products that we trust and are a good fit for your home. Some homes need a screen mesh, some are just fine with your run of the mill drop in guards. Every home and gutter system is unique, but we’re here to debunk or explain some cons of the gutter guard system. Gutter guard installation can be expensive. They can cost anywhere from $700 to several thousand dollars. This is going to depend on what type of system you are looking at. Several thousand seems a bit high for the types of guards we carry but it can get up into the thousands. The bigger your home the more it’s going to cost. Get an estimate, you’ll be surprised with the costs. They are not 100% foolproof. Gutter guards still need occasional cleaning. Like we’ve stated before, gutter guards are not meant to never clean your gutters. Wet leaves and other debris can stick to anything. Some gutter guards are designed to allow a smoother surface for debris to slide off but a few stragglers will be left behind.  Some gutter guards can only keep out larger debris like leaves, sticks and more out of your gutters. Dirt, shingle grit and more can still find it’s way in. If you ever lean a ladder against your gutters (when cleaning them or hanging Christmas lights, for example), the gutter guards will become dented. This will lessen their effectiveness from that point forward. First of all, try to never lean your ladder against your gutter unless you have a stand off attachment. This can damage your gutters if you put too much pressure on them so of course it can damage your gutter guards. One small dent shouldn’t effect your gutter guards ability to work properly. If you notice a lot of damage your gutter guard, you may need to have that section replaced ( make sure your gutter is okay around that area too!) Here is a great guide to proper ladder use from ThisOldHouse. The additional weight of gutter guards could cause your gutters to sag in the center. If gutter guards are causing your gutters to sag in the center, the problem isn’t the extra weight. It’s probably going to be an issue with your gutter hangers or your fascia boards. Check your hangers/screws to see if they need tightened or check your fascia to see if the boards need to be replaced. Gutter guards should not cause your gutters to sag. They are not that heavy. If you happen to have a steep roof or valleys (where downward-sloping sections of roof meet and water runoff is heavy), the water can overshoot the gutter guard itself. This is true but it will happen gutter guard or not. Sometimes divertors will need to be installed to help direct the water where it needs to go.  We’ve had homeowners with and without gutter guards call about this problem. Tree seeds can get caught in the gutter guard slots and sprout. Forming gutter trees — and some types of tree seeds grow rather quickly! This is true. Depending on how long you let your gutters go uncleaned, it can happen! We suggest that even with gutter guards you will need to clean your gutters at least once a year. This can also depend on the type of gutter guard you have. Our mastershield gutter guard system keeps out the smallest debris ( as small as shingle grit!). So if you really want to clean your gutter only once a year, it might be your best bet. For a free estimate on gutter cleaning, repairs or adding gutter guards, call us today! Gutter Maintenance Tip #34 – Rust Spot Removal

Post Image

Rust Spot Removal Gutter maintenance does require climbing up to your gutters. Not only to make sure that they are free of debris. Inspect your gutter to ensure no damages have occurred. If you notice a maintenance issue such as rust, holes, or a leaky joint. Try to DIY or hire a professional to take care of it for you. Choose to DIY, please make sure to follow all ladder safety rules and never put yourself a dangerous situation just to save a few dollars. If you find minor rust damage you can easily scrub it away with a wire brush. If the rust has gone on for too long it can create holes. A trickier fix. Though aluminum gutters do not rust they are easier to puncture than a steel gutter. Ask a professional about which course of action would be best for treating the hole.   For a free estimate on gutter cleaning, repairs or adding gutter guards, call us today!
