Preventing & Clearing Frozen Downspout

Post Image

Preventing & Clearing Frozen Downspout Frozen downspout can happen during the dead of winter. If you’re experiencing this problem fear not because we have what is more than likely causing the problem and what you can do to prevent them from being frozen for too long. First of all you might be wonder, ” How does this happen?” Frozen downspouts occur during the winter during or after winter weather occurs. There are a few likely scenarios that can cause ice accumulation in downspouts. If there is a large amount of snow on the ground that is covering the bottom mouth of the downspout. It will cause your downspouts to freeze. Debris in your downspouts can also cause frozen downspouts, as well as elbows of downspouts because the act as a collection point for still water and when the temperatures are cold enough, ice will form. Finally ice dams along the roof can accelerate the freezing of downspouts, if they sit on your roof for too long. “What Should I do?” If it seems like the cold weather won’t be lasting for more than a couple days and you’ve removed all the snow accumulation by the bottom of the downspout, leave the downspout alone. The warmer weather will allow the downspouts to thaw and melt. If you live in an area where you might not see above freezing point for a while you have a couple of options… How To Thaw A Frozen Downspout Fight frozen water with warmer water. If the weather is permitting and you can safely climb a ladder, pour warm water into the top of the downspout. This should be good enough to thaw minor ice buildup and break up the blockage. Another way you can thaw is by running hot water down the OUTSIDE of the downspout near the blocked area. If neither of these ways help, please DO NOT use force by striking your downspout. This could cause more damage than good. Just heating up the downspout will do the trick, at least for melting the ice, it will do nothing if there is a large blockage due to debris ( this is why cleaning your gutters at least twice a year is very important).  If none of these trick help, please call a professional. Having consistently frozen downspout require immediate attention especially if the weather is looking grim in the future. If left unattended this ice may back up all the way to the gutters. Creating an extra weight and leaving more opportunities for leaks and improper drainage to happen. This leads to expensive repairs and a possibility for your gutters to tear away from your home.  “How Can I Prevent This From Happening?” If it’s already too late to protect your gutter, try some of the example we’ve listed above or call a professional, such as Gutters & Guards, Inc. Minimize the chances by wrapping your downspouts with heat tape or using a heated gutter guard. This will also help prevent ice dams in your gutters as well as ice build up in downspouts. Make sure to clean your gutters out at least twice a year to prevent debris build up. When in doubt call the professionals. You can also invest in Gutter Guards. This will keep debris from building up in your gutters & downspouts and cut your gutter cleaning time spent in half. Winter Lawn Maintenance

Post Image

Winter Lawn Maintenance can be an important part of keeping you homes’ curb appeal up. Keeping your gutters clean is a part of lawn maintenance. Taking care of your lawn and landscape can help you keep you gutters clean because there is less debris to fall into your gutters. During the winter, take warmer days to do some lawn work, such as: Weed Removal This is a job you can work on after all the bigger snows for the season are over. Weed out all the flowerbeds to prepare for spring growth and gardening. Fertilize Shrubs & Flowerbeds Fertilize around your shrubs and flowerbeds in late fall/early winter to get them in prime condition for spring planting. This will replace all the nutrients that can be lost from the soil during the hot summer months. Once the weather turns cold, the fertilizer will stay in the soil and feed your lawn’s roots all winter long. Remove Dead Flowers Remove dead flowers from flower beds and pots. It might be a good idea to store your pots and other small plant holders that could potentially break from the extreme cold weather or might get broken if the wind knocks them down. Avoid excess lawn traffic If an object is left on your lawn over the winter, this creates a dead spot on your lawn. Also make sure to use your sidewalk and walkway. 4 Things To Consider When Replacing Gutters

Post Image

4 Things To Consider When Replacing Gutters Gutter replacement can be a quick task but if you’re replacing older gutters that are on an older home or a new-to-you home, there are a few other things you need to consider as a homeowner. Is the current size of gutter the right one? Have you noticed when it rains that the water is overshooting the gutters or around the area where the valley run off goes water is going everywhere? This is from an improper gutter size. To learn more about the appropriate size for your home please visit our previous post about k-style gutters. It’s also important to remember that if your homes style is more suited for a half round gutter that those gutters will hold a lot less water than a k-style. Color! This is important to think about. So you’ve had white gutters on it all along. Did you know what we offer over 18+ different colors of gutters? If you want your gutters to match your trim to blend in. Not stick out like a sore thumb, this could be a great option.  To learn more about the color options. We provide please visit a recent blog. We posted on choosing a gutter color or our services page to view all of the options. If you’re looking for the same gutters, simply choose the profile that best matches the original. How’s the roof look? Usually when you replace your roof the gutters are replaced at the same time since they need to be removed while the replacement takes place. Although you may not need to replace your roof, it’s already good to check and see the condition of your roof. This can go the other way as well. If you are looking on replacing your roof and you have some flexibility in your budget, check the status of your gutters. If you notice a large amount of shingle grit in your gutters it can point to needing a new roof. What about the fascia? This is another important place to look at whenever you are thinking about replacing your gutters, especially if your gutters have been on the down-turn over the past few years and had lots of leaks. Fascia rot can really affect your gutters. Think of it this way, if your wooden fascia is rotten and it becomes soft this allows for your gutters to pull away from your home. And if it goes unnoticed then your gutters could potentially fall off your home, damaging your new gutters.   An extra thing to think about is how often do you clean out your gutters? Are you finding a large amount of debris in your gutters? Investing in gutter guards can cut the amount of time spent cleaning out your gutters. It won’t completely eliminate the need to clean out your gutters at least once a year but it will save you a lot of time. Learn more about the gutter guards we offer. Salt & Snow Removal

Post Image

Salt & Snow Removal This time of year snow removal is a common task for a homeowner. It can mean getting up early to clear the walkway and driveway to removing snow from your roof.  Using salt to melt ice is a go to solution for most homeowners when it comes to melting ice from your porch, but using it on a regular basis during the winter months can cause pits in the cement used for walkways, steps and other concreted areas. It will eventually cause it to crack or cause potholes in the surface.  If you get too much around the metal of your railing or patio furniture, it can cause corrosion to take place. Using too much salt for snow removal can also be harmful to the nearby streams and lakes. So it’s important to use salt sparingly. There are 3 easy steps to cut back on the amount of salt used when clearing walkways. Shovel the snow first to removal all of the light, fluffy snow. Then shovel again, using the shovel to break up chunks of ice. If there are still slippery spots that cannot be removed with simple shoveling, use salt to melt ice or another type of de-icer to remove ice. An important factor to remember is that salt stops working ( as a de-icer ) at 15 degrees (fahrenheit). So other methods will need to be used. Sand can be used to create traction on walkways.  After all the snow has melted and dried up sweep up all of the excess salt to prevent it from going into the water ways and to use it again. It’s also important to clean the large amount of snow from your roof to prevent ice dams and too much strain on your roof. For more information about rooftop snow removal please view a previous post on the subject. For a free estimate on gutter installation, repairs or gutter leaf guards, call us today!
