Gutter Maintenance Tip #42 – Roof Maintenance

Post Image

Roof Maintenance Roof Maintenance. Gutters are an extension of your roof. They work as a system to protect your home from leaks, and other mother nature related problems. So maintaining your roof is just as important as maintaining your gutters. 3 ways to keep your roof maintained is by removing loose debris from the shingles of your roof, such as leaves, twigs and branches. This helps protect and prolong the life of your roof and will help keep the bigger, gutter clogging debris out of your gutters! The biggest places to look at is valleys and where a wall and roof meet. Also keep an eye out for moss, milder and mold. A large tree or shade. Over time moss, mildew and mold build up. There are companies that specialize in mold, moss and mildew buildup.  NEVER use a hard bristled brush or power washers. This can destroy your shingles and cause water leaks. The last way to maintain your roof is by unclogging and keeping your gutters and downspouts cleaned. Backed up gutters pushes water over the gutter onto your roof. Running down the fascia board. With it going against the grain of your roof, this can cause water leaks!  That’s why we believe in keeping a clean and maintained gutter. Hail Damaged Gutter : What To Do

Post Image

Hail Damaged Gutter : What To Do Hail Damaged Gutter. This time of year hail with thunderstorms is common. Though we may not think that they are very dangerous, the amount of damage they can do is quite amazing. NOAA estimates that in the past 10 years property hail damage has ranged from $482.9 million to $2.96 Billion, and since hail lasts an average of 15 minutes that’s a hail of a lot of damage. Pardon our pun. Hail Storms can damage your roof, automobiles, and other property. The larger the hail the more damage it can cause but even the smallest hail can cause quite the damage. When the wind blows it, not only your roof can be damaged but your gutters as well.  If you encounter this during a hail storm we have some steps you can take to get it fixed. Before Any Storm Take some pictures of your roof as it is now. You’ll want to plan ahead to be consistent about photographing the same 3 to 4 sections of your roof over time. Be sure to digitally date the photos and keep them printed out in your files and stored digitally on an external hard drive. Contact your insurance company and find out how many “impacts per square” constitutes hail damage under your homeowner policy. Generally, it’s between 5-10 impacts per square. Keep this information, along with the contact person’s details with your homeowner policy. After the storm blows over inspect your home and automobile. Look at your roofing shingle, look for dings and damage on your car and gutters (both are metal). For Non Visible Damage Take and date photos of the actual hail from that storm. Keep a file or an Excel spreadsheet that tracks rainfall afterward. Occasionally check your gutters (and photograph them) to stay on top of roof shingle grit deterioration, a key sign that there was damage from the hail storm. Start checking for signs of exposed asphalt in your roof (that used to be covered by shingle grit). If the signs of damage are there, you’ll likely notice them after 4-6 months. At this point, you may want to contact your insurance company. For Visible Damage If the damage is pronounced right at the time of the storm, again, take and date pictures of the actual hail from the event for your records. You may want to ask your insurance company to send out an adjuster to review the damage. Based upon the number of impacts, you may qualify to have your roof replaced under your homeowner policy. If you can show before pictures to the adjuster, you may help set a reference point, again furthering your claim. Hail storms can damage gutters and gutter guard systems too. Hail can come down with such tremendous force.  It can punch a hole right through the gutter. Having to be replaced. If have to replace your gutter guard, it’s a great opportunity to look at the latest advancements and not just replace it with the same product you had in the past. You’ll likely find lots of debris in the gutter, choose a system that will keep out even the shingle grit going forward.   For a free estimate on gutter cleaning, repairs or adding gutter guards, call us today! Gutter Maintenance Tips #9 – Clean Leaves From Roof

Post Image

Clean Leaves From Roof When it comes to cleaning your gutters there are a few things you need to do BEFORE you start. The biggest task you need to tackle is clean leaves from roof. If you don’t clean your roof from all debris that same debris can get in your gutters and undo all that hard work you put into cleaning them out. There are a few different techniques you can try if you are not hiring a professional.  Chances are leaves are in your valleys if you have a lot of trees. If you leave them on your roof they will trap moisture and eventually decompose. This can lead to weeds and possible leaks. You can use a leaf blower to get them off your roof but PLEASE use caution and safe practices. Wet leaves make it more difficult. Another option is using a water hose but we warn you not to use a power washer. A power washer has too much force and can damage shingles. If this seems unsafe to you please call a professional. For a free estimate on gutter cleaning, repairs or gutter leaf guards, call us today! Fixes For Common Gutter Problem

Post Image

Fixes For Common Gutter Problem A clogged gutter can become a homeowners worst nightmare if it’s left for too long. Overflowing water can damage your homes foundation creating expensive repairs that can all be avoided by unclogging your gutters. This is one of the most common gutter problems that a homeowner faces. We suggest that you clean your gutters at least twice a year. This will help prevent clogs from forming and leave you with a lot less stress. When your gutters become clogged it defeats the purpose of having gutters on your home and the excess weight of all the debris and water can cause them to sag and pull away from your home causing even more problems and issues. Gutters & Guards, Inc. has a long-term maintenance program that allows you to forget about your gutters and we contact you to schedule a cleaning as many times a year as your home will need ( we usually do twice but that can depend on the amount of trees around your home. More trees more cleaning and vice versa). If you are going the DIY gutter cleaning route, make sure to use proper ladder safety. Clear all the debris from your gutters, flush them with a garden hose ( without nozzle). If they’re flowing properly, your job is down. If not you may have a clog, in this we suggest you call a professional to clean your downspouts since it can be difficult to unclog them. Another way to prevent clogs is by investing in a gutter leaf guard system.  This does NOT mean you can install and forget. You will have to (no matter what) check your gutter guards and make sure that they are doing their job by keeping debris out, but they will keep clogs from forming by keeping that worse out of your gutter.
