10 Quick Tips About Your Gutters

Post Image

10 Quick Tips About Your Gutters Gutters are an important part of your home. They help gather rain water and direct it away from your home and foundation. We have 10 Quick Tips About Your Gutters and how to keep them in working order. 1. Clean and unclog your gutters A LEAST twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. This ensure that your gutters will not malfunction creating costly repairs and headaches. If you live in an area where there are more trees you may want to invest in gutter guards or clean them out more frequently! 2. Always make sure that your downspouts are unclogged and that they are carrying water out and away from your home’s foundation. 3. Seamless gutters have less seams ( the only seams are at corners) and therefore have smaller chances to leak. 4. Mold, water stains or discoloration of areas around gutters indicate a need for cleaning or repair. 5. In the winter months, it’s important to have clean gutters because clogged gutters can make ice dams form or become a bigger problem, since water is backing up. 6. If you clean your gutters yourself, make sure to use proper ladder safety! 7. Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes! 8. If you neglect your gutters for too long, all the weight for the debris will cause your gutters to sag and pull away from your home. This can lead to damages if they fall from your home! 9. Seamless gutters can be made of aluminum, galvanized steel or copper. 10. After cleaning all the debris from your gutters, make sure to use a garden hose to rinse out your gutters and check for leaks in the downspouts! Do not use a power washer, this can cause damage to your gutters or other parts of the home. Another tips that we tell our customers is to never climb on a ladder if you are not completely comfortable with it. This can lead to a bad injury! Gutter Maintenance Tips #9 – Clean Leaves From Roof

Post Image

Clean Leaves From Roof When it comes to cleaning your gutters there are a few things you need to do BEFORE you start. The biggest task you need to tackle is clean leaves from roof. If you don’t clean your roof from all debris that same debris can get in your gutters and undo all that hard work you put into cleaning them out. There are a few different techniques you can try if you are not hiring a professional.  Chances are leaves are in your valleys if you have a lot of trees. If you leave them on your roof they will trap moisture and eventually decompose. This can lead to weeds and possible leaks. You can use a leaf blower to get them off your roof but PLEASE use caution and safe practices. Wet leaves make it more difficult. Another option is using a water hose but we warn you not to use a power washer. A power washer has too much force and can damage shingles. If this seems unsafe to you please call a professional. Salt & Snow Removal

Post Image

Salt & Snow Removal This time of year snow removal is a common task for a homeowner. It can mean getting up early to clear the walkway and driveway to removing snow from your roof.  Using salt to melt ice is a go to solution for most homeowners when it comes to melting ice from your porch, but using it on a regular basis during the winter months can cause pits in the cement used for walkways, steps and other concreted areas. It will eventually cause it to crack or cause potholes in the surface.  If you get too much around the metal of your railing or patio furniture, it can cause corrosion to take place. Using too much salt for snow removal can also be harmful to the nearby streams and lakes. So it’s important to use salt sparingly. There are 3 easy steps to cut back on the amount of salt used when clearing walkways. Shovel the snow first to removal all of the light, fluffy snow. Then shovel again, using the shovel to break up chunks of ice. If there are still slippery spots that cannot be removed with simple shoveling, use salt to melt ice or another type of de-icer to remove ice. An important factor to remember is that salt stops working ( as a de-icer ) at 15 degrees (fahrenheit). So other methods will need to be used. Sand can be used to create traction on walkways.  After all the snow has melted and dried up sweep up all of the excess salt to prevent it from going into the water ways and to use it again. It’s also important to clean the large amount of snow from your roof to prevent ice dams and too much strain on your roof. Winter Ladder Safety

Post Image

Winter Ladder Safety Winter Ladder Safety. This time of the year, we hope you have already had your gutters cleaned but for those who are still working on it we have a few ladder safety tips to make sure that your experience is safe as possible. The most important rule is to NEVER try and do work when it’s wet and slippery.Climbing on ladders can be very dangerous when the weather conditions are rainy, misty or snowy. Get down immediately if high winds, rain, snow or other inclement weather begins. Winds can blow you off the ladder and rain or snow can make both the rungs and the ground slippery. Use ladders with slip-resistant feet and wear clean, dry and slip-resistant shoes when climbing a ladder. When you climb, always face the ladder and grip the rungs to climb – not the side rails. Always keep three points of contact on the ladder whether two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand. When climbing, keep your hips between the side rails and do not lean too far or overreach. Re-position the ladder closer to the work instead. If you have to use a step ladder near a doorway, lock or barricade the door and post signs so no one will open it and knock you off the ladder. A straight or extension ladder should be placed one foot away from the surface it rests against for every four feet of ladder height. When you climb, always face the ladder and grip the rungs to climb – not the side rails. Always keep three points of contact on the ladder whether two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand. When putting up holiday decorations, always use the proper step stool or ladder to reach high places. Don’t stand on chairs, desks or other furniture. When climbing, keep your hips between the side rails and do not lean too far or overreach. Re-position the ladder closer to the work instead. Other quick tips to remember: Keep large pets such as dogs inside or on a rope far away from the ladder. Do not use a ladder in the wind. Do not drink before or while climbing the ladder. Avoid using medication that makes you drowsy before climbing on the ladder. Never climb above the third rail from the top of a ladder. What Causes Icicles On Gutters?

Post Image

What Causes Icicles On Gutters? What Causes Icicles On Gutters? This is a question that is often asked when you see them on your roof-line. After a big snowstorm, the snow that remains on your roof (because of the temperature and slope) will start to slowly melt and then it refreeze into icicles. Icicles caused by many different reasons: inadequate insulation house air leakage into from the attic through thermal bypasses improper house ventilation Icicles influenced by the structure of the house, weather conditions, and the color of your roof.  If you have an older home, it’s important to keep your insulation and ventilation up to date. Ways to reduce the chances of bad icicles and ice dams is by proper air sealing around your roof-line and attic, high levels of insulation, and adequate ventilation in your home. You can also have a roof rake to rake large amounts of snow off of your roof. If you already have ice dams and icicles on your roof then there isn’t too much you can do. DO NOT try and remove the icicles by chipping away at them. It’s a hazard to both your roof and gutters not to mention if they fall the could damage something on the way down. Plus it’s not safe to be chipping on top of a ladder. What you can do to reduce the ice dam on your roof is using a melt sock. To learn more about raking snow and snow melting , we have a post that sets out the pros and cons of each method. If your roof or gutters are damaged by the stress of snow and icicles, please give a professional (like Gutters & Guards,Inc ) a call and we’ll be happy to help you get your roof and gutters back into working order.
