Prevent Slick Spots

Post Image

Prevent Slick Spots Prevent Slick Spots. This winter can be a very dangerous time when ice and snow come into play. Slick spots can form on walkways due to dripping gutters. Some dripping will happen, it cannot be avoided but you can prevent the majority of it and take precautions to keep your walkways free of ice. Our first suggestion is making sure your gutters and downspouts are free of all debris and clogs. Debris and clogs in your gutters can cause water to overflow and run over your gutters. This can be avoided very easily by cleaning your gutters out at the very end of fall/ beginning of winter. This will allow water/melted snow to run easily out of your gutters. Another tip is to rake snow off of your roof. When snow begins to build up on the edge of your roof, rake it off. Leaving the snow there can cause ice dams to form, creating a large leaking water supply to find itself on your walkways. It can also cause ice icicle to form. Although ice icicles can happen no matter what you do to prevent it ( besides install heated gutter guards), you can give them less to form on and have less to worry about. Our third tip is to salt your walkways after you have cleared them. This will help melt the snow and give your a dry surface to walk on.

Hanging Holiday Lights Pt 3

Post Image

Hanging Holiday Lights Pt 3 We have discussed this subjects over the past few years and this is out third installment on hanging holiday lights to explain crucial key points to help you have a safe and easy time hanging lights. A few that are crucial when preparing to hang Christmas lights. 1. Always untangle and check the lights on the strand. This is so you won’t have to untangle them while on your ladder or so they won’t short and become a potential hazard for a fire to start. 2. It’s best to not do this alone if possible.  Having someone help you by handing you supplies will not only make it go by a little faster but also they will be there for your safety. 3. Ladder safety is very important.  Make sure that the ground is even, step on the pail shelf or reach further than you can, and that someone holds the ladder for you. 38% of ladder falls happen while hanging Christmas lights. ( source ) 4. Use a timer. This can save you from having a super expensive electric bill or being the Clark Griswald of the neighborhood. (You probably shouldn’t hang your lights like him either, very dangerous.) 5. Don’t over do it. Remember that you do have an electric bill and that could ruin your holiday spirit.   To read more about the subject, please view our first blog and our second blog about it. Thanksgiving Home Prep

Post Image

Thanksgiving Home Prep It’s the week of Thanksgiving and that can mean a real busy schedule, especially if you are hosting a dinner this Thursday. If you are not hosting and being a visitor this Thanksgiving, you might want to contact your host to see if you can help out by bringing a dish or something. Also plan out your traveling. If you have pets make sure it’s okay that you bring them along or plan to board them. If you plan on hosting Thanksgiving this year, we have a few tips to help you get through the week. Week Of Plan your menu/cooking schedule. This will help you plan out your morning of Thanksgiving better and allow for you to pick up all that you will need at the supermarket. We suggest 2-3 days before the day that you shop for perishables. That may include your turkey depending on if you found one before or not. Day Before Tidy up the house. Mainly just the rooms that your guests will be in the most. You could recruit some help from your family to make it go a little faster. Make sure you give that bathroom a good scrub down and check your toilet paper levels to assure that you have plenty. Decorate if you haven’t already. Sweep your entrance way and maybe add some cute crafts or decor to get everyone in the Thanksgiving spirit. Here is a great board from All You Magazine that will help get your home in the spirit. Enjoy and have fun with it! Set the table. This includes the kids table as well. You can place all the dishes, placecards, flowers and anything else that will be fine sitting out on the table overnight. Prep your serving dishes. Find all your serving dishing and have them ready to transfer the cooked food into the next day. It may even help to have them in the order you will need them as your follow your cooking schedule. Thaw out anything that may take some time to unthaw, such as your turkey. Day Of Start with the turkey. It takes the longest to cook thoroughly. Have sink filled with soapy water so you can wash dishes as you go. After everyone gets their first plate make sure to cover all the leftovers until you place them in Tupperware to keep in the fridge. This will prevent food-borne illnesses. Enjoy your company! Hanging Lights On Gutters Part 2

Post Image

hanging lights on gutters With the holiday season right around the corner, homeowners are already hanging lights on gutters. We already posted a blog about hanging lights on gutter guards which you can still ready up about if you’re looking for ways to just attach them to your gutters, if you don’t have gutter guards on your home and the fascia board is much too low for your tastes. We suggest using all-in-one gutter clips. They will hold the lights and firmly attach to your gutters. They’re also light so your gutters will not be strained in any way. Before you start hanging gutters it’s important to plan. Choose the style and colors of lights you want to use.  LED lights not only save energy but you can connect up to 25 strains. This could save you a lot of time, money and planning on where to plug in all the extension cords you’d need. With Incandecent lights you can only connect 2-3 strains. Next you need to choose where you want to place lights. We suggest drawing and outline of your home and marking where you want lights. Popular places to hang lights are: Rooflines/Eaves Bushes/ Trees Pillers/Posts/Railings Window/Door Frames Driveway/Pathways Planters/Window Boxes Choose 2-3 places and plan if you want to use regular bulbs or icicles. Also if you want to use colored, white or a mixture. Just don’t overdo it. Check your lights to make sure they’re in working order before you hang them. Do not use lights with frayed wires. This is a fire hazard. Make sure to have a helper to help it go faster and to help you keep it straight. Ladder safety is also an important part too. To learn more about ladder safety check out our ladder safety post. After you get all your lights set make sure to use a timer. That way you’re not wasting energy during the day and you don’t need to keep your lights all night. If you follow these few steps, hanging lights should be a breeze this year. Just make sure to choose a night, dry day. Also make sure your gutters are clean before you start hanging lights. If not this could cause problems and a big mess to clean up.  For a free estimate on gutter cleaning, repairs or adding gutter guards, call us today! Prepare Your Yard For A 4th Of July Party!

Post Image

The key to a successful 4th of July party is location, and how comfortable your guests are. It doesn’t take a whole lot of work to get your yard in perfect 4th party zone but there are some important steps to getting it ready. Two Days Before 4th of July Party:   Clean Those Gutters It’s not technically the season for this, but you know some of you still haven’t done it – when green things are shooting up from your gutters you really shouldn’t put it off anymore! Tidy Up Garden And Lawn Pull weeds and trim up bushes.  Remove all lawn ornaments that might cause guests to trip or are in the way.  Also if you have pets presents, picking them up before you mow might be a good idea so no one’s shoes get ruined. Straighten Up House Especially The Kitchen And Bathroom The bathroom is  the most important room to make sure that it is stocked and clean for guests to use. The Day Before: Mow the Lawn Surprisingly enough it will be much more comfortable for your guests and for cleaning up after the party. Scrub Patio Furniture Make sure all furniture is clean, free of mildew stains, and looking great for your party. Check Your Grill Make sure your grill has plenty of propane, charcoal and that it works! Nothing can ruin a party more than not having a functional grill to enjoy your hamburgers and hot dogs on! A Few Hours Before: Place Chairs And Tables In Inviting Clusters This allows for your guest to have a great seating atmosphere and they will be more likely to stay longer if they are less uncomfortable. Place Tables For Food   Make sure to place your tables on a surface that is flat and stable enough that it will not tip or fall back.  That could be disastrous. Also this would be a great time to set up the different station for people to get their napkins, cups, utensils, etc. Bug Repellent Candles This is a must. Nothing kills a party more than bugs “bugging” your guests.  It might be smart to have a bug repellent station where you have a couple extra bottles of bug spray and invest in some candles like Off Lanterns. The less your guests are being pestered the happier and better it will be.   If you follow these few steps you will have less to worry about and more fun which is what having a 4th of July party is all about!
