Solutions For Gutter Debris

Post Image

What kind of gutter debris are you dealing with? This questions sounds still but solutions for gutter debris can be used for different types of debris. When you’re cleaning your gutters, these solutions may help you clean a little faster. Fine Debris such as pine needles and small leaves, can slip in your gutter unnoticed and build up over time. Pine needles can accumulate and become heavy fast. If they sit in your gutters for a long time it can cause your gutters to sag or for water to build up over time. Fine screen mesh gutter guards are the best solution to keep the needles at bay. Products like Mastershield and screen mesh are best for this. Your standard drop in gutter guard has openings that are too large and will not be able to keep out needles. Both Mastershield and screen mesh have fine smooth surfaces for debris to easily flow over the gutter and not clog your gutters. Dirt and shingle grit are another common debris that can be found in your gutters. Mastershield prevents shingle grit from getting in your gutters but screen mesh not so much. Hooded gutter systems could protect your gutters from the majority grit but not all.  If an absurd amount of shingle grit is getting into your gutters, it may be time for a new roof. In the springtime, pollen and other blossoms can find their way into your gutters. They make the inside of your gutters slightly sticky because it’s almost a powder like substance and this can get debris to stick to your gutter. Running the water hose over your gutter and/or gutter cover can help dissolve the pollen. You should already be cleaning your gutters after the long winter season and doing any necessary repairs. Trapped Water In Gutter Trapped Water In Gutter. Have you noticed that a gutter has been trapping water? The cause could be a couple different issues. We going to explain what to look for and how to fix it. If you’re gutter is trapping water, there are a couple different issues that could be causing it. The first is a clogged gutter. We suggest that you clean out your gutters two times a year and more if you live in an area where there are a lot of trees. Leaves can cover the opening to the downspout and trap water in your gutter. So make sure to keep your gutters free to debris and if it becomes too much of a job hire a professional and install gutter guards. The second issue is your gutters being improperly pitched. We suggest that you give this one to the professionals. It may seem easy but this one is best left to the professionals. Gutters do not sit straight at a 90 degree angle. Gutter Maintenance Tip #36 – Smashed Downspout

Post Image

Smashed Downspout Smashed Downspout. Damage to your downspout can happen at any time. It can cause real damage to your gutter system allow debris to gather in your downspout and backing water up and over your gutters. Thankfully replacing a downspout is a fairly easy task to do. Step 1 – Removing the Old Downspout Using a drill, unscrew the clinchers, brackets and existing downspout from the top elbow. Step 2 – Attaching New Elbows If the elbow needs replaced, remove the existing elbow attached to the gutter of the house by unscrewing the gutter screws and pulling firmly. There are normally screws on both the front and back sides of the elbow. Fit the new elbows together in the exact same shape, comparing them side by side. The pieces are designed to interlock. Use the gutter screws to replace the elbows, utilizing the same front and back holes in the gutter. The elbows should now allow for the straight section of the downspout to fit snuggly up against the house. Step 3 – Attaching the New Straight Section Measure the length of the long straight portion of the old downspout using the tape measure. Make sure the section is measured with the square shoe removed. Cut the new straight portion to the size of the old one. Fit the new square shoe on the end of the new straight section of the downspout. Make sure the square shoe faces away from the house. Attach the new downspout to the elbow S curve with two gutter screws: one front and one back. Step 4- Clinchers Using the self drilling concrete screw, attach the clinchers to the side of the house in the exact places of the previous clinchers. Use a gutter screw to attach each clincher to the gutter, holding it firmly to the house. If you do not have the time or do not have the proper tools, call a gutter company (such as Gutters & Guards, Inc.) to come out and replace the downspout for you. It will take them even less time!
