Why Are My Gutter Guards Causing…

Post Image

Why Are My Gutter Guards Causing… Gutter guards can be a real help if you find yourself cleaning your gutters more than twice a year or are constantly fighting downspout clogs. They are not meant to relieve you from ever having to clean your gutters. There is NO product as of date that can do that ( unless you do not have gutters which in this area of Virginia is not a good thing). Gutter guards are meant to help you cut back the time you spend cleaning out of your gutters and prevent clogs from occurring. There are many different styles and types of gutter guards out there today. We’re not trying to sell you the most expensive products out there but products that we trust and are a good fit for your home. Some homes need a screen mesh, some are just fine with your run of the mill drop in guards. Every home and gutter system is unique, but we’re here to debunk or explain some cons of the gutter guard system. Gutter guard installation can be expensive. They can cost anywhere from $700 to several thousand dollars. This is going to depend on what type of system you are looking at. Several thousand seems a bit high for the types of guards we carry but it can get up into the thousands. The bigger your home the more it’s going to cost. Get an estimate, you’ll be surprised with the costs. They are not 100% foolproof. Gutter guards still need occasional cleaning. Like we’ve stated before, gutter guards are not meant to never clean your gutters. Wet leaves and other debris can stick to anything. Some gutter guards are designed to allow a smoother surface for debris to slide off but a few stragglers will be left behind.  Some gutter guards can only keep out larger debris like leaves, sticks and more out of your gutters. Dirt, shingle grit and more can still find it’s way in. If you ever lean a ladder against your gutters (when cleaning them or hanging Christmas lights, for example), the gutter guards will become dented. This will lessen their effectiveness from that point forward. First of all, try to never lean your ladder against your gutter unless you have a stand off attachment. This can damage your gutters if you put too much pressure on them so of course it can damage your gutter guards. One small dent shouldn’t effect your gutter guards ability to work properly. If you notice a lot of damage your gutter guard, you may need to have that section replaced ( make sure your gutter is okay around that area too!) Here is a great guide to proper ladder use from ThisOldHouse. The additional weight of gutter guards could cause your gutters to sag in the center. If gutter guards are causing your gutters to sag in the center, the problem isn’t the extra weight. It’s probably going to be an issue with your gutter hangers or your fascia boards. Check your hangers/screws to see if they need tightened or check your fascia to see if the boards need to be replaced. Gutter guards should not cause your gutters to sag. They are not that heavy. If you happen to have a steep roof or valleys (where downward-sloping sections of roof meet and water runoff is heavy), the water can overshoot the gutter guard itself. This is true but it will happen gutter guard or not. Sometimes divertors will need to be installed to help direct the water where it needs to go.  We’ve had homeowners with and without gutter guards call about this problem. Tree seeds can get caught in the gutter guard slots and sprout. Forming gutter trees — and some types of tree seeds grow rather quickly! This is true. Depending on how long you let your gutters go uncleaned, it can happen! We suggest that even with gutter guards you will need to clean your gutters at least once a year. This can also depend on the type of gutter guard you have. Our mastershield gutter guard system keeps out the smallest debris ( as small as shingle grit!). So if you really want to clean your gutter only once a year, it might be your best bet. For a free estimate on gutter cleaning, repairs or adding gutter guards, call us today! Gutter Maintenance Tip #34 – Rust Spot Removal

Post Image

Rust Spot Removal Gutter maintenance does require climbing up to your gutters. Not only to make sure that they are free of debris. Inspect your gutter to ensure no damages have occurred. If you notice a maintenance issue such as rust, holes, or a leaky joint. Try to DIY or hire a professional to take care of it for you. Choose to DIY, please make sure to follow all ladder safety rules and never put yourself a dangerous situation just to save a few dollars. If you find minor rust damage you can easily scrub it away with a wire brush. If the rust has gone on for too long it can create holes. A trickier fix. Though aluminum gutters do not rust they are easier to puncture than a steel gutter. Ask a professional about which course of action would be best for treating the hole.   For a free estimate on gutter cleaning, repairs or adding gutter guards, call us today! Gutter Emergency: What To Do BEFORE Your Repairman Arrives

Post Image

Gutter Emergency: What To Do BEFORE Your Repairman Arrives Gutter Emergency: What To Do BEFORE Your Repairman. Here are the gutter problems that are most common, and some recommended solutions. Sagging Gutters and Gutters Pulling Away from the House This is usually a problem with the hangers, the hardware that secures the gutters to the fascia. They might have deteriorated over time, the fasteners may have backed out of the wood, or they’re spaced too far apart to support the weight of full gutters. You can tighten these by yourself but always have a professional take a look because you fascia could be rotting. By tightening them just a little ( don’t over tighten them either) it can help just for short-term. Leaks and Holes Leaky gutter joints sealed by caulking the joint from the inside with gutter sealant. Very small holes can be filled with gutter sealant. Larger holes will require a patch. If you can’t find a gutter patching kit at the hardware store, you can make a patch from metal flashing. This is just a temporary fix as well. Have a professional repair or replace the part of the gutter if the hole is so large. Improperly Pitched Gutters A professional should always handle this especially if you have seamless gutters. Not much you can do except make sure the gutters are clean and possibly manually removing water. Downspouts Draining Too Close to the Foundation Downspouts need to extend several feet from the house, or they’ll dump right into the basement. Gutter extensions attached to the bottom of the downspout will discharge water well beyond the foundation. Add a pipe or extension above ground.  Be very careful not to hit it with your lawnmower. You will have to have a professional bury it. Missing Gutters If your house has no gutters at all, consider investing in a system. The cost depends on the material. Most residential gutters are aluminum, which is lightweight and durable. Vinyl, galvanized steel, and copper also are available options. Gutters & Guards install Seamless gutters which allow for less holes, rust spots and repairs being needed. If your home is missing gutters, there isn’t too much you can do beside call a professional to take care of it as fast as they can. (source)   For a free estimate on gutter cleaning, repairs or adding gutter guards, call us today! Gutter Maintenance Tip #24 – Gutter Scoop Tool

Post Image

Gutter Scoop Tool When cleaning gutters it’s best to wear protective gloves but you should also use a gutter scoop tool as well. A Gutter scoop tool will get out all of the leafy debris in your gutters as well as some of the more wet debris. You can find them at any hardware store. We do warn you to not use a metal scoop because it can damage the bottom of the gutters as well as the seams. A metal scoop can damage the bottom of a gutter by scraping against the bottom and this can allow rust to start to form. If the bottom is already rusting this will speed it up. As for the seams, it can damage the caulking meant to keep leaks from forming. If you are looking for a professional to clean your gutters for you, they should already be using non-harmful methods to clean gutters. Give them a call and be wary if they use a metal scoop to clean your gutters. For a free estimate on gutter cleaning, repairs or adding gutter guards, call us today! 10 Quick Tips About Your Gutters

Post Image

10 Quick Tips About Your Gutters Gutters are an important part of your home. They help gather rain water and direct it away from your home and foundation. We have 10 Quick Tips About Your Gutters and how to keep them in working order. 1. Clean and unclog your gutters A LEAST twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. This ensure that your gutters will not malfunction creating costly repairs and headaches. If you live in an area where there are more trees you may want to invest in gutter guards or clean them out more frequently! 2. Always make sure that your downspouts are unclogged and that they are carrying water out and away from your home’s foundation. 3. Seamless gutters have less seams ( the only seams are at corners) and therefore have smaller chances to leak. 4. Mold, water stains or discoloration of areas around gutters indicate a need for cleaning or repair. 5. In the winter months, it’s important to have clean gutters because clogged gutters can make ice dams form or become a bigger problem, since water is backing up. 6. If you clean your gutters yourself, make sure to use proper ladder safety! 7. Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes! 8. If you neglect your gutters for too long, all the weight for the debris will cause your gutters to sag and pull away from your home. This can lead to damages if they fall from your home! 9. Seamless gutters can be made of aluminum, galvanized steel or copper. 10. After cleaning all the debris from your gutters, make sure to use a garden hose to rinse out your gutters and check for leaks in the downspouts! Do not use a power washer, this can cause damage to your gutters or other parts of the home. Another tips that we tell our customers is to never climb on a ladder if you are not completely comfortable with it. This can lead to a bad injury!
